I am doubting that Gaskin said this. I can't find it anywhere and it seems wrongly worded.
Not paying attention to my own troubles might be sometimes be a good idea, and not paying attention to other peoples' troubles might sometimes be a good idea, but the quote seems to possibly suggest not paying attention to other people as people.
If a quote is not readily accessible (e.g., if you can't find anything close to it on Google), it seems to me a good idea to give it's source - that is, where did Stephen say this?
